I know there have been several such pieces these last few weeks. I am encouraged so many are wondering what they can do. It’s bolstering knowing so many want to do something. They’re ready to do something.
So, what additional things can be done?
While I was readying myself to do my practices last night, some thoughts arose in my awareness. These are what they were:
Republican leadership has advised against holding in-person town halls. How then do we have access? Calls to their staff are disregarded, sometimes met with scorn and ridicule. Is access necessary? My solution is to contact Democratic representatives in the area and ask them to hold town halls in these red strongholds. Turn them blue. If their representatives won’t represent, ours will.
Tell constituents the truth. Let them know what’s at stake. Explain proposed legislation.
If there is no local Democratic leadership, find some elsewhere.
Let those at these town halls know what immediate actions they can take. Share who they can boycott.
Work with already existing political groups to get billboards up: ones that detail what constituents will lose. Show them how it affects them personally in their day-to-day living.
Be specific. Use data. Let them know where this administration wants to reallocate their monies. Explain the difference between corporate welfare and social welfare. Explain what agricultural subsidies are. Education is key.
If you happen to live in a Blue State, ask your government to disallow monopolies from operating within its borders. Make it a states’ rights issue.
If the Trump administration has denied your state aid, withhold your federal taxes. Litigate it if need be.
Sue. Join a class action suit. Start a class action suit. Stall. Inundate them with suits. Get injunctions. This disrupts any momentum the administration falsely believes it has.
If it’s illegal, refuse to comply. Know your rights. Reach out to those willing and able to help you.
Reward local economies with your business.
Use your libraries.
Borrow books. Start a community book exchange.
Start indoor gardens. Swap whatever is in excess.
Never comply in advance.
Actively look for the good news. There is lots of it every day. Our power is where our focus is. Focus on our momentum.
Ask how you can help?
I know we have been asked to march and call representatives in the past. Some are still asking we do this. These are effective with governments who care, who authentically want to hear from those they represent. This is not what is happening here. It requires new ways of guaranteeing our will is enacted.
If you feel compelled to still do them, please do them, but ask what else can be done.
If all you feel able to do is hold positive intent for good government, do that.
Everyone can do something.
Have Hope
